AMANTUM is an Italian not for profit organisation. Support us in investing in further vital research into diagnosing, treating and ultimately curing NonTuberculous Mycobacteria Lung Disease.
The purpose of the Association is the recognition by the institutions, of all NTM diseases, of research funding for the treatment and creation of tools to prevent these diseases. What is NTM? Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease is an infection caused by bacteria that are common in the environment.
The symptoms of NTM lung disease are similar to other lung conditions. So similar, in fact, that NTM is sometimes misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Many people have symptoms, but may think it’s due to a lung condition they already have. People can have NTM for months, sometimes years, without knowing it.
NTM lung disease comes in two main types. The less severe kind is called nodular bronchiectasis. It causes scarring in your airways. That makes it hard for you to cough up and clear out mucus. Older women are most at risk for this type.
A more severe form is called cavitary NTM lung disease. In addition to scars, cavities or pits also form in your lungs. This could lead to lung failure.
The decision to begin treatment for NTM infection is a challenging and difficult one. Treatment with a combination of antibiotic drugs (drug regimen) is the mainstay of therapy for these diseases. However, these drugs carry certain risks (side effects) and are often poorly tolerated, have a high cost, and require individuals to remain on the medications for a lengthy period of time.
